Day 10: What you think when you hear the words “be yourself”?
Well, I don’t have any negative connotations to it, really. I think things are better without pretending or faking. But it really depends on how the person takes this phrase. It, however, bugs me though, we someone uses the ‘be yourself’ notion to act like a barbarian and have absolutely no manners or even respect for other people around them. You know those people that go ‘I’m just being myself and I don’t care what people think!’ I think perhaps in this case, watching yourself isn’t about what other people will think of you, it’s about respecting others and respecting your identity in front of other people too. Often, I think people don’t understand what being yourself means in a deeper context and they just use it as an excuse to rebel and not care about the world around them. I don’t like that.
